Jobs, mail will remain in Whitestone.
The Whitestone postal facility, which has been in danger of closure since 2011, has been saved, according to U.S. Rep. Gary Ackerman. If the facility had been closed, more than 700 jobs in Queens would have been eliminated altogether, with a small number of jobs being transferred to the post office’s sorting center in Brooklyn. “The decision to take the Processing and Distribution Center off the chopping block is great news for the residents of Queens and the many businesses that depend on the critical services provided by this facility,” Ackerman said. “The plan to move the center’s responsibilities to the Brooklyn distribution location was a horrible idea that would have reduced the borough’s accessibility to a critical facility that …

Silverstein, Vallone and Duane are also considering runs for the seat, a Queens Democratic Party source says.
Three Democrats are already considering a run for Councilman Dan Halloran's, R-Whitestone, seat in the fall of 2013, a Queens County Democratic Party source said. John Duane, a former northeast Queens assemblyman and brother of state Sen. Tom Duane, D-Manhattan, and Matthew Silverstein, a Democratic state committeeman, have already registered campaign committees for the seat. And Paul Vallone, the brother of Councilman Peter Vallone Jr., D-Astoria, is also mulling a bid for the seat, the Democratic Party source said. "Right now, the party is focusing on the congressional race and a few Assembly races," the source said. "After that, they'll look at this race." Several other northeast Queens Democrats would likely jump into the 2013 race …

Find out who picked up endorsements this week for the Sixth Congressional District race.
It's time again to take a look at the endorsements that have been handed down in the race for New York's Sixth Congressional District this week. Councilman Dan Halloran Halloran, R-Whitestone, collected his first big endorsement this week from the Uniformed Fire Marshals Association. The councilman collected the endorsement on Monday while standing before the Engine 306 house in Bayside, which he took credit for helping to save during last year's budget negotiations. “As a working class kid from Queens, I appreciate all that our uniformed servants do to protect us," he said. "Our City’s fire marshals are on the front lines in keeping our families safe. They risk life and limb so that we may sleep well at night." Assemblywoman Grace Meng …

Fourth Democrat jumps into primary race to replace Gary Ackerman.
Sixth Congressional District candidate Jeff Gottlieb has fired back to state Assemblyman Rory Lancman’s claims that his bid to replace U.S. Rep. Gary Ackerman, D-Bayside, is a “sham.” Lancman, D-Fresh Meadows, is currently running against state Assemblywoman Grace Meng, D-Flushing, for the newly created congressional seat. Earlier this week, he accused the Queens Democratic Party, which has thrown its weight behind Meng, of attempting to split the district’s Jewish vote by encouraging Gottlieb to run for the seat. But Gottlieb, a member of the JFK Regular Democratic Club, said he was entering the race to be a “true voice of the people.” “I am saddened that Assemblyman Lancman has decided to issue vicious political attacks upon learning of …

Assemblyman says new candidate in Sixth District race is a ploy to split the Jewish vote on Primary Day.
Update, 3:20 p.m.: Queens County Democrats spokesman Mike Reich unequivocaly denied the accusations Monday afternoon, saying Lancman's morning email was an outright fabrication. "He's shooting from the hip and making up stories. I guess he's afraid, but it seems pretty desperate to make these kind of accusations without any proof whatsoever," Reich said. "Shame on him, because it's an absolute lie." Reich said he hasn't personally spoken to Gottlieb since last December, and that the latest candidate in the district is not a plant to divide Jewish voters, as Lancman said Monday morning. "I can assure you of this, I can say it absolutely, the Queens Democratic organization has nothing to do with the candidacy of Mr. Gottlieb," Reich said. …

All three potential Democratic challengers roast GOP councilman on entrance into race.
Ready or not, City Councilman Dan Halloran, R-Whitestone, is already taking a beating from three sides after his decision to join the campaign for Congress. Halloran announced yesterday evening his intention to run in the newly created Sixth Congressional District, which includes Flushing, Forest Hills and portions of northeast Queens. A statement from Halloran’s council offices said he was entering the race to “create job, reinforce support for Israel, America’s strongest ally, and create energy alternatives to reduce the price of gasoline on hardworking families." To Forest Hills residents and political junkies, the gas prices note should sound familiar. U.S. Rep. Bob Turner, R-Forest Hills, has been using it to pound away at President…
