First six-candidate debate kicks off last month of primary campaign.
Six candidates vying to be the first representative from New York’s new Sixth Congressional District put themselves, and their conversational skills, on display Monday night during a debate at Flushing's Queens Library. Participating in the event were candidates Dan Halloran, a Republican, Elizabeth Crowley, Rory Lancman, Grace Meng and Robert Mittman, all Democrats, and Green Party candidate Evergreen Chou. Organized by the MinKwon Center for Community Action, the forum was designed to give candidates a straightforward platform from which to address the pressing issues on the city, state and national levels. The event stayed civil with the candidates — almost all of whom are very familiar with one another — joking together between …
Councilman seeks to stamp out unsightly fliers.
With election season in full swing, Councilman Mark Weprin D-Oakland Gardens, is tackling one of the more cosmetic blights of dirty campaining: illegal signs. Wepin wants to triple the current fines for posting signs illegally on public property. His office says they can be distracting to drivers and strain city resources to remove. Northeast Queens activists were so irritated by one large sign that remained up weeks after last election cycle that two of them wrestled a large sign down from a public post themselves. “When signs eventually fall off, they can create a hazard as the nails used to affix them are exposed. The signs litter our streets, gardens and parks," said Frederick Kress, coordinator at Citizens Against Graffiti Everywhere…

Cab drivers say that 16 to 20 percent increase is necessary to help cover gas expenses.
The good news is that it might soon be easier to hail a cab in Queens. The bad news is that it might be expensive. The Taxi and Limousine Commission will consider increasing cab fares as a result of taxi owner’s complaints of high gas prices, says Crain’s New York. Fleet owners want a fare increase of 16 to 20 percent, arguing that gas prices have gone up nearly 45 percent in the past six years to nearly $4 per gallon, says the article. "The fare hasn't changed since 2006, so it is reasonable for taxi drivers and fleet owners to put this on the table," TLC Commissioner David Yassky said in a statement. "We will consider their petitions over the next couple of months." A 50-cent surcharge went into effect in 2009 to fund subway and bus …
Volunteers cleaned, planted and weeded at Douglaston site as part of It's My Park Day.
The Douglaston Garden Club and a group of local volunteers painted the railings, weeded flower beds, planted seeds, trimmed bushes and cut grass at Catharine Turner Richardson Park this past weekend. The club performed the upgrades as part of the citywide "It's My Park Day" celebration, a day during which thousands of volunteers across the city gather to clean up their local green spaces. Attendees at Saturday's clean up in Douglaston weeded behind Catharine Turner Richardson Park's hydrangeas and planted a dogwood tree that the garden club received through the city's Million Trees initiative. "Its a park, so there is always something to do to make it better," Douglas Montgomery, the garden club's president. "It was a very successful day. …

'The Dictator,' 'Battleship' and 'Beyond the Black Rainbow' are mediocre, but 'Polisse' is a gripping police drama.
Sacha Baron Cohen may be a comedic genius, but his latest film – “The Dictator” – is lacking the hilarity and socially conscious raison d’etre of his previous pictures, “Borat” and “Bruno.” “The Dictator” may seem timely, considering that its lead character is Middle Eastern despot Aladeen (Cohen), whose nation is attempting to develop nuclear weapons. But it’s difficult to discern whether Cohen and director Larry Charles are satirizing current events or, rather, Americans’ perceptions of those events. In the film, Aladeen’s nation is threatened by war if he fails to discontinue its weapons manufacturing program. He arrives in New York with the intention of speaking at the United Nations, is betrayed by a compatriot and ends up wandering …
