The Beauty Insider: Little Neck's Luscious Locks
Indique's owner discusses selection of Remy Hair.
What do Lady Gaga, Ciara, the ladies of the Real Housewives and super model Chanel Iman’s hair have in common? They all come from India.
That’s right - like most celebrities, these A-listers also wear hair that is not their own. And Little Neck’s very own Indique Hair is the source of their luxurious manes.
Store manager Dakia Riley-Dunn gave me a personal rundown on the hair itself and how to achieve that gorgeous full head of hair.
Unlike other brands that is mixed with animal and synthetic hair, Indique’s hair is 100 percent virgin Remy Indian hair.
The company gets the hair directly from the source-women in India. Their reps hand pick women from villages who cut off their hair as part of their religion and instead of the typical practice of burning the hair, Indique repays the women by giving money to their temples.
This hair, which is untouched and unprocessed, is then shipped back to the U.S. to be sanitized and sold.
“Their hair is their beauty,” Dunn said of the donors, “They really take care of their hair and they truly have the best quality and most healthy hair you can find.”
So what exactly is virgin Remy Indian hair?
Remy refers to the fact that all of the cuticles grow in the same direction from root to end. In other words, the same way the hair grows from a woman’s scalp is the same way it is sewn and wefted together. This prevents any shedding, tangling or matting and allows the hair to fall effortlessly, moving with the same movements of your own hair.
According to Dunn, no two women’s hair is mixed. Each four-ounce tube is unique and comes from one donor.
Indique has created six unique collections. The Pure Collection is the company's flagship virgin Indian hair product. After being sanitized, it is sold in its purest form.
The Hysteria Collection is a line of colored hair, while the Euphoria Collection consists of wigs and crowns and the Studio Collection includes temporary hair extensions. The Keratique Collection is virgin hair with patented keratin prebonded onto the hair.
Indique hair is available in different textures, from curly or wavy to straight, and varies in length from 10 to 30 inches. It is guaranteed to last up to 12 months or longer, if treated with care.
“Treat it like your real hair. Shampoo it, condition, color it, style it, anything that you would do with your real hair, you can do with this hair,” Dunn said.
Indique has been in the neighborhood for nearly five years and has become a go-to hair spot. Its founder, Ericka Dotson, has 25 years of experience in the industry.
With locations in Boston, Nashville and Soho, the Indique team quickly saw the need for a Queens locale and held a grand opening in Little Neck in August.
“We know that once you leave the city, you don’t really want to go back in. People in Long Island and Queens are used to driving and parking, so this location was ideal. Here you get to have a consultation and take your time,” Dunn said.
Weaves have become the new accessory, so if you’re dreaming of having Kim Kardashian-style locks, stop in and visit Dakia for a personal consultation at the Little Neck store, located at 248-12 Northern Blvd. or call 718-224-0002 to schedule an appointment.
